Educational Outreach
Nova Singers firmly believes that music education is a necessity, not a luxury. Through our educational outreach program Project Sing!, educational workshops like those in which the American Boychoir participated, and our partnership with children’s choirs, we seek to share our love of fine music with the youth of our community. We also give free tickets to students of any age to all regular Nova Singers concerts. Bringing nationally renowned a cappella groups such as Chanticleer and charging only $5.00 for students is one more way in which we try to encourage young people to engage in choral music.
Nova Singers Educational Outreach Programs:
Project Sing!
Since our 10th anniversary season, Nova Singers operated the popular educational program Project Sing! Every year in February eight singers from each of two area high school music programs have the unique opportunity to join Nova Singers in rehearsing and performing several pieces. We seat the high school students every other person with the Nova Singers, so that they truly feel surrounded by the professional adult sound. Many students who have participated in Project Sing! have told us that this experience was as inspirational to them as the Illinois All-State. Their directors continue to tell us that these students returned to their high school choirs after singing with Nova Singers with much higher expectations of themselves, more motivation to work hard, and greater personal excitement about the music.
Nova Singers and Children’s Choirs
Every year at Christmas, we invite the Moline Boys’ Choir and the Carl Sandburg College Children’s Choir to sing with Nova Singers on our holiday program. Dr. Lane works with the children and the Nova Singers combined for about 45 minutes before the performance, and the combined choirs perform on the concerts. Many young people have been turned on to choral music in a more serious way after this experience. This fall, Brent Behrens joins the Nova Singers as a full-time member, having first sung with Nova Singers and fallen in love with singing as a member of the Moline Boys’ Choir about 10 years ago on one of our Christmas programs!
