Knox College President Richard Millman Appointed to National
Commission on Educational Leadership
Richard S. Millman, President of Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, has been
appointed by the American Council on Education (ACE) as a member of its
Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness. Millman's appointment
takes effect immediately and runs through 2001.
The Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness advises ACE on
policy and operations. Its next meeting is April 28 in Washington, DC.
Millman, who took office at Knox on Jan. 1, has written several books on
geometry and calculus, and numerous articles in academic journals. In addition
to his scholarly work, he also has written and given presentations about
mathematics education and internationalization of the curriculum.
Before coming to Knox, Millman was provost, dean of the faculty and professor
of mathematics at Whittier College. Previously he held top academic and
administrative posts at California State University-San Marcos, Wright State
University, Michigan Technological University and Southern Illinois University.
He also has been program director for geometric analysis at the National
Science Foundation.
Millman earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, a doctorate in mathematics from Cornell University and a
certificate from Harvard University's Institute of Educational Management.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college,
located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33
nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building
remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
