Mathematician Carolyn R. Mahoney to Speak at Knox College

Carolyn R. Mahoney, professor and chair of the Mathematical Studies Department at California State University at San Marcos, will give a talk, "The Mathematical Education of Teachers Project" at 4 p.m., Monday, March 29, in Room A-219, Umbeck Science-Mathematics Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Mahoney is a member of the steering committee of the Mathematical Education of Teachers Project, created by the Conference Board on Mathematical Sciences and the Mathematical Association of America to improve the education of future teachers.

Mahoney has served on several national programs aimed at improving teacher education in mathematics, as well as enhancing public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. She is a member of the American Mathematics Society, Mathematical Association of America, National Association of Mathematicians, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Association for Women in Mathematics.

Mahoney earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at Ohio State University in 1983. In 1989 she was one of the founding faculty in the department of mathematics at California State University at San Marcos, and currently serves as chair of the department. She was elected to the State of Ohio Women's Hall of Fame for Education in 1989 and is included in the "Who's Who in Science and Engineering Guide."

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 35 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
