Candace Gingrich to Speak, Lead Vigil, Oct. 24 at Knox College

Candace Gingrich, a field consultant and spokesperson for Human Rights Campaign, will give a talk, "Making Your Vote Count: Anti-Hate Crime Legislation and the 1998 Elections," at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, at Knox College. Following the lecture, at approximately 9 p.m., Gingrich will lead a candlelight vigil from the Knox campus to the public square, in memory of Matthew Shepard, a gay university student murdered in an alleged hate crime last week in Laramie, Wyoming.

The lecture and vigil are free and open to the public.

Human Rights Campaign is a national lesbian and gay political organization. It lobbies the federal government on gay, lesbian and AIDS issues; participates in election campaigns; organizes volunteers; and conducts educational and training programs. HRC conducted a national vigil in Shepard's memory on Monday, October 19.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
