With Residences at Capacity, Knox College
Preps for Largest Enrollment since 1974

Knox College in Galesburg has invested more than $1.25 million in student housing in the past 12 months, preparing for its largest enrollment this fall since 1974. Officials at the liberal arts college are anticipating more than 1150 students to start the 1997-98 academic year. It's the largest enrollment since 1974, when Knox had 1181 students, and up from the 1996-97 enrollment of 1135.

To prepare for a larger student body, Knox has renovated nine houses and apartment buildings, at a total cost of more than $1.2 million in the past year year, for use as student residences. Five of the residences are located along South West Street, one on West Knox Street and three on West Tompkins Street.

In addition, a new 52-student, $1.75 million residence hall is under construction on South West Street. It is scheduled for completion in January 1998.

"One of the effects of the growing enrollment at Knox has been a significant investment in the neighborhood," said Pamela Faria, vice president for administrative services. "The newly renovated houses are more home-like and they're popular among students."

Knox currently has housing for approximately 1045 students, including fraternity housing. "To accommodate student preferences, we need to have a certain number of rooms in reserve," Faria explained. "We're at absolutely full capacity this fall. The new residence will provide the necessary reserve and another good housing choice for students." Two years ago, Knox rented a floor in a motel as temporary student housing.

Residence halls will officially open for new students on September 6 and returning students on September 9, with the first day of class on September 11.
