"We are pleased to open this new residence hall in our continuing commitment to enhance residentiality," said Knox College President Rick Nahm. "During the past three years, Knox has spent more than $3-million to build, renovate and upgrade student residences."
"The students who are moving in are really excited about it," said Susanne Chawszczewski, Associate Dean of Students for Campus Life. "Everyone was extremely pleased with the housing lottery that was held to assign the rooms." The students living in the new hall are predominantly sophomores and juniors.
The residence hall at 251 South West Street features four townhouse-style units, each housing up to 13 students.
The four residential units share a central building that contains a large meeting room, elevator, kitchen, laundry and other support facilities. "We've dubbed it `the Compass Room,' because the building is at the northeast corner of South and West Streets," Nahm said. "This room will be open to campus-wide uses, including classes, group meetings and special events. During the summer, the entire facility will be available as a residential conference center."
Construction began with the formal ground breaking last February 28. The general contractor is Fox Construction, Galesburg. Landscaping will continue throughout the spring.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
