US News & World Report: Knox College Rises in Ranks of Nation's Best Educational Values; Rated Among Top "International" Colleges

Knox College has risen a notch to fourth place in the new U.S. News & World Report rankings of the nation's best educational values. The magazine's annual ranking of what it calls "schools that offer a high quality education at reasonable cost" placed Knox fourth in 1997-98. Knox's current rank is up from fifth in 1996-97, eighth in 1995-96 and tenth in 1994-95.

"For several years Knox College has been among the top ten values in national liberal arts colleges, and now the trend is clear that Knox is moving up in this prestigious ranking," said Knox President Rick Nahm.

U.S. News also ranked Knox as one of the most "international" of liberal arts colleges. With seven percent of its students coming from outside the U.S., Knox ranked eighth in the nation in the proportion of international students, a new category in this year's survey.

The U.S. News Best Value rankings are based on both educational quality and on the "discounted cost," defined by U.S. News as the average cost actually paid by students attending the school. According to U.S. News, the discounted price -- tuition minus the average need-based financial aid grant -- is the "more relevant [cost/quality measure] for most private schools."

"A school has to be in the top half of its group in terms of overall quality, in order to be eligible for a best value ranking," Nahm said. "Knox is ranked in the second quartile of national liberal arts colleges and is the highest-ranked educational value among national liberal arts colleges in Illinois."

Rankings and methodology are available from the U.S. News website at http://www.usnews.com or in the printed copies of the magazine. The Best Colleges issue will be published on Sept. 1 and the Best Value rankings on Sept. 8.

Knox College will begin the 1997-98 academic year with orientation on Sept. 6, registration on Sept. 10 and the first day of class on Sept. 11.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
