Knox College will host student delegates from other colleges and universities in the Midwest at the third annual Intercultural Summit, Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 7-10, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois. The summit will feature free, public lectures, as well as small group discussions for the delegates, on issues such as religion, ethnicity, international perspectives on the U.S., affirmative action in higher education, sexual orientation and diversity.
The conference opens at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, in Kresge Recital Hall, Ford Center for Fine Arts, and will feature a performance by Knox College's Umoja Gospel Choir.
The keynote lecture, "Turbulent Mexico," will be given at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9., in Kresge Recital Hall, by Rafael Landerreche and Daniel Santos Aguilera of the Global Exchange speakers program. They will discuss political, cultural, and environmental problems in Tabasco, Mexico.
The Ma'at Production Association of Afrikan Centered Theatre, MPAACT, will perform "Other World Lovers," at 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, in Harbach Theater, Ford Center for Fine Arts, and "From Funk to Fusion" at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, in Kresge Recital Hall. "Other World Lovers" explores the themes of gender roles, traditional values, and religion in contemporary Africa. "From Funk to Fusion" showcases the many styles of music created or inspired by Africans, both in Africa and world-wide. MPAACT is a multi-disciplinary organization dedicated to producing original works by this nation's finest emerging theatre artists.
The summit will also feature The World Game Workshop at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9. World Game workshops are fast-moving, interactive multi-media simulation that aims to give participants a new understanding of world issues. For twenty years, World Game simulations have been held throughout the United States and in over twenty countries. The workshop is free, but advance registration is required, as there is a limit of 200 participants.
