Knox College's 1996 homecoming festivities, Oct. 11-13, will include class reunions, lectures, sporting events, art show and awards presentations. The annual event will be held on the Knox campus in Galesburg.
In the annual Homecoming Alumni Lecture, Peter E. Cozzens, class of '79, will speak on "Life at Knox 100 and 150 Years Ago" at 4:15 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, in the Hermann Muelder Reading Room, Seymour Library. A career officer with the U.S. Foreign Service, Cozzens has held diplomatic positions in Costa Rica, Peru, and Mexico. He also has authored four books and numerous articles on the Civil War. His books, This Terrible Sound: The Battle of Chickamauga and The Shipwreck of Their Hopes: The Battle of Chattanooga, were main selections of the History Book Club. Both were also chosen by Civil War Magazine as two of the 100 best books ever written on the war.
Immediately prior to Cozzens' lecture, Knox will unveil in the Muelder Reading Room a portrait of Dr. Harold Way, a long time member of the Knox faculty. A native of Colchester, IL and a 1925 graduate of Knox, Way taught physics at Knox from 1927 to 1948. He died in 1995 at the age of 90. The portrait was painted by Harland Goudie, professor emeritus of art at Knox College.
Photographs by Marielle T. Farnan will be featured in the annual Alumni Art Show, which opens with a free, public reception at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11 in the Gallery, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. Farnan graduated from Knox in 1993 and received her M.F.A. from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1995. Farnan will give a lecture about her work Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Round Room in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts.
Comedian James Wedgewood will perform at 8 p.m., Friday, Oct., 11 in Kresge Recital Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. The show is free and open to the public.
Three Knox Service Awards will be presented during the Homecoming Convocation at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Kresge Recital Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. The annual awards in recognition of volunteer service will be given to Merle H. Glick, '46 , of Pekin; Marjorie L. Gustafson, '42, of Galesburg; and Irene Bowman Landis, '36, of Galesburg.
This year's convocation will feature three alumni speakers, the Rev. Charles H. Hosutt III, '55, pastor of Westside United Church of Christ in Cleveland, OH; Janet M. Koran, '71, of Chicago, general counsel for the YMCA of the United States; and Lisa L. Moorehead, '86, assistant vice president and attorney for Rezmar Corp. in Chicago. The Alumni Choir, led by Tim Reynolds, acting director of choirs, will perform.
Reunion activities will be held throughout the weekend for the Knox classes of 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, and 1991. Information about class reunion events is available from the Knox Alumni Affairs Office, 309/341-7238.
The Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, in Seymour Union. This year's inductees are David Gardner, '85, sales representative for the Ram Golf Corp. in Melrose Park, IL; William Heerde, '42, retired coach and physical education instructor from Albuquerque, NM; and the Rev. Charles H. Hosutt III, '55. In addition, there are two posthumous inductees, Daniel J. Roberts, '42, and Harold J. Turner, a coach and professor of physical education at Knox from 1938 to 1964. Banquet tickets are available from the Alumni Affairs Office.
The Knox-Lombard Fifty Year Club Luncheon will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Lincoln Room, Seymour Union. Rodney Davis, Szold Distinguished Service Professor of History, will lead a free, public "Walking Tour of Historical Galesburg," starting at 1 p.m., Saturday, in front of Old Main.
In athletic action, the Knox women's soccer team will play at 4:30 p.m., Friday; the women's volleyball team at 1 p.m., Saturday; the football team at 1:30 p.m., Saturday; and the men's soccer team at 2 p.m., Saturday. Half-time entertainment at the football game will be provided by Knox graduate Rick Hader as "Professor Myron Noodleman." A teacher in Tulsa, OK, Hader has entertained fans at sporting events nationwide.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
