Members of the Knox College faculty will present a panel discussion, "Interpreting Scalia: A Faculty Response," at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union. The event is free and open to the public.
The purpose of the panel is to look at the consequences for people's
lives of Justice Scalia's Supreme Court decisions and opinions.
Scalia gave a lecture at Knox last week. The panelists will speak
to different topics, drawn from cases in which Scalia has participated,
then will respond to questions from the audience. The panel will include:
Konrad Hamilton, assistant professor of history, who will discuss
affirmative action, voting rights and civil rights.
Scott Redenius, visiting instructor of economics, who will discuss
gender discrimination and the case involving the all-male Virginia
Military Institute.
Jane Stangl, assistant professor of sport studies, who will discuss
gay rights.
Marilyn Cohen, of the Emma Goldman Clinic, Iowa City, who will discuss reproductive rights.
The discussion is sponsored by Students Against Sexism in Society, and the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Community Alliance.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
