Degas Scholar Richard Brettell

to Speak Oct. 14 at Knox College

Richard Brettell, an art consultant and noted scholar on Edgar Degas, will give a lecture, "Degas: Beyond Impressionism," at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 14, in the Round Room, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Brettell's lecture will discuss the later years of Degas' work, especially the period covered by the exhibit currently on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. Brettell is former director of the Dallas Museum of Art and former Searle Curator of European Painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Most recently he has held visiting professorships in art at Harvard and Yale.

The day after his lecture at Knox, Brettell will lead a group of Knox students on a trip to the Degas show at the Art Institute.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
