Knox College Appoints 1996-97

Watson P. Bartlett Scholars

Three students at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, have been selected as Watson P. Bartlett Scholars for the 1996-97 academic year.

They are Becky Richardson, a senior theatre major from LaSalle, Illinois; Daniel Polley, a senior history major from Mendota, Illinois; and Simon Nashold, a senior biology and secondary education major from Mendota, Illinois.

The Watson P. Bartlett Scholarship Fund was established by a gift from the estate of Mr. Bartlett, Knox class of 1920. The scholarship is annually awarded to outstanding Knox College students from the LaSalle County area.

Mr. Bartlett, who died in 1989, was a Mendota-area farm owner and acknowledged authority on the plants of Starved Rock State Park. His wide ranging intellectual interests encompassed botany, poetry, literature, history, economics, and Spanish.

With gifts from Mr. Bartlett's estate, Knox also established the Watson Bartlett Professorship to support instruction and faculty research in plant biology, ecology, and conservancy.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,100 students from 42 states and 33 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
