Henry Joe Lecture, Oct. 26
October 17, 2006

Henry Joe, professor emeritus of art at Knox College, will give a lecture, "The Meaning of Chinese Art," at 4 p.m., Thursday, October 26, in the Round Room, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Joe will explore concepts of faith and morality expressed in the traditional art of the East, from its origin in the ancient past of the Chinese people to the present. He will discuss how Chinese art created cultural unity and contributed to the formation of the Chinese national identity.

Joe taught ceramics, sculpture and Asian art history at Knox from 1967 until his retirement in 1995. He earned his bachelor's degree in liberal arts, master's degree in ceramic sculpture and master of fine arts degree in metal sculpture at the University of Montana. He also studied pottery at the University of Minnesota and Chinese art history at the University of Southern California.

The lecture is sponsored by the Knox College Art Department and the Integrated International Studies Program, through a grant from the Caterpillar Foundation.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 46 states and 46 nations. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
