Knox-Galesburg Symphony, Nov. 13
Cellist Anne Brunner featured with works by d'Albert, Mozart and Sato
November 09, 2004

The Knox-Galesburg Symphony will feature cellist Anne Brunner at its performance at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, November 13 at the Orpheum Theatre, 57 S. Kellogg, Galesburg. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from the Orpheum at 309-342-2299.

The Knox-Galesburg Symphony, under the direction of music director/conductor Bruce Polay, will perform Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor and "Misthaven" by Sumiko Sato. Brunner will perform the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra by Eugene d'Albert.

Anne Brunner, a freshman at Lake Forest High School in Illinois, began playing cello at age five and, since 2000, has studied with Hans Jorgensen Jensen, professor of cello at Northwestern University. She has been a member of the Midwest Young Artists (MYA) for the past five years, playing in both the junior and senior orchestras and chamber groups. In 2002, she was the overall winner of the MYA Junior Division.

Also in 2002, Brunner was the first place winner in the Junior Cello Division of the Society of American Musicians and gave a televised recital for the Steinway Young Artists Concert Series. In 2003, she won first place in the Intermediate Division and second place in the Senior Division of the Society of American Musicians. During the summer of 2003, she studied at the Meadowmount School of Music in New York and was the guest soloist for the Knox-Galesburg Symphony's Concert on the Lawn. Earlier this year, as a member of the Midwest Young Artists chamber quintet, Brunner took part in the Fischoff Music Competition.

Sumiko Sato is a native of Japan who received her early training in music at the Yamaha Music School and later earned a doctorate in composition at the University of Washington. "Misthaven" draws its title from a cabin in the mountains, south of Seattle where Sato stayed for a retreat. "Misthaven" was chosen through the KGS International Call for Scores.

Eugene d'Albert (1864-1932), a native of Glasgow, is the composer of twenty-one operas and one of the most frequently played composers of his day. When he completed the Concerto for ello and Orchestra in 1899, d'Albert had already composed three operas, two piano concertos and a symphony in addition to chamber music.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was thirty-two years old when, in six weeks, he composed his last three symphonies, including the Symphony No. 39 in E-flat and the Symphony No. 41 in C. Although the work is classical in form and technique, it is presciently romantic in emotional intensity.

Discounted 3-concert ticket packages for the February 26, March 26 and April 23 concerts are available as low as $20.00, with single concert tickets starting at $8.00. Children and students are half-price. Those who purchase the KGS 3-concert discount ticket package also receive discounts for the KGS non-subscription events including the February 5 KGS Trio, and the May 7 pops concert, "Music with Memories." Tickets are available at the Orpheum Theatre Ticket Office (309-342-2299), 60 S. Kellogg St., Galesburg or at the door.

On Friday, November 12 Brunner and Polay will visit all District 205 elementary schools and Costa Catholic School as part of the KGS In-School Tours. Brunner will also present "The Cello" Music Mornings Program on Saturday, November 13 at 10:00 am at the Galesburg Public Library. Music Mornings, co-sponsored by the Knox-Galesburg Symphony and the Galesburg Public Library in cooperation with Galesburg School District 205, is a free concert preview for children ages preschool through 5th grade.

The concert is sponsored, in part, by Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
