Author Valerie Martin to Speak May 3

Author Valerie Martin will read from her own works at 4 p.m., Friday, May 3, in the Common Room, Old Main, at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The reading is free and open to the public.

Martin has written two collections of short fiction and several critically acclaimed novels, including "Italian Fever" and "Mary Reilly." Her latest book, "Salvation," is a biography of St. Francis of Assisi told through episodes — a style inspired by medieval frescos that depict the lives of the saints in vividly painted panels.

The Chicago Tribune praised Martin's "great touch for vivid detail." Although "Salvation" is a biography, it is "constructed and reads like a novel," wrote the New York Times Book Review.
