Knox College President Appointed to State Historic Agency

(GALESBURG) — Knox College's President Roger L. Taylor has been tapped by Illinois Governor George Ryan to serve on the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency's Board of Trustees.

"I'm honored to be selected by Governor Ryan to serve the State," Taylor said. "And I appreciate very much Senator Carl Hawkinson's support of my nomination in the Senate. Given the rich history of Western Illinois, Galesburg and Knox, I am excited to be able to serve on the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Board."

"Roger Taylor is an excellent choice," said State Senator Carl Hawkinson. "His experience will be an asset to the Agency's board."

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency operates 60 historic sites and memorials across the state which attract about three million visitors each year. It operates the Illinois State Historical Library, the state's chief historical and genealogical research facility that is home to a world-renowned, 46,000-item Abraham Lincoln Collection. The Agency publishes magazines for history enthusiasts, teachers, and history students, and coordinates the state's History Fair program for junior and senior high school students. And it administers all state and federal historic preservation laws and incentive programs in Illinois. This cabinet-level state agency is overseen by a seven-member Board of Trustees, of which Taylor is now a member.

Knox College is currently involved in two major historic preservation projects— the Lincoln Studies Center, a nationally renowned program dedicated to the study of the life and work of Abraham Lincoln; and the Alumni Hall renovation, the restoration of a 112-year old building on the Knox campus.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
