Knox President Attends Harvard Seminar

GALESBURG -- Knox College President Roger Taylor recently attended Harvard University's Seminar for New Presidents in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The prestigious annual seminar, held July 19-24, was limited to 40 new college presidents from all sectors of higher education.

The Harvard Seminar for New Presidents focuses on areas that college presidents are likely to face in their first months and years in office. Sessions covered leadership, governance, fundraising, financial management, personnel, academic issues, and strategic planning.

"Having graduated from Knox and served on the Board of Trustees, I was already familiar with Knox and many aspects of its operation," Taylor said. "The Harvard Seminar gave me a chance to share experiences and hear from college and university presidents, from coast to coast and other countries, on the challenges facing higher education."

Taylor will be formally installed as Knox's 18th president on October 11, 2002. He was named to the presidency of the College in February 2002, after serving as interim president since July 2001. Taylor was a member of the College's Board of Trustees from 1988 to 2001, and Chair of the Board from 1999 to 2001.

Taylor received his bachelor's degree at Knox College and his law degree, with honors, at Northwestern University. A widely respected trial lawyer, Taylor remains Of Counsel with the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis of Chicago, where he practiced for 30 years.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
