Knox Dance Professor Awarded Residency

GALESBURG -- Jennifer Smith, assistant professor of dance at Knox College, has been awarded a summer residency in dance at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smryna Beach, Florida. Smith will work for the next month as an associate artist with choreographer Doug Elkins, founder of one of the nation's leading dance companies.

Smith will collaborate with other artists to develop a new work for Elkins' dance company. Elkins has won awards from the Jerome Foundation, Metropolitan Life-American Dance Festival, Arts International, Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Joyce Theater Foundation's Fund for New Works.

Smith has taught at Knox since 1998. In addition to her work at Knox, she has performed as a guest artist with dance companies throughout the United states and abroad, including the New Music/New Dance Ensemble in Italy, and with choreographer David Dorfman for Chicago's Navy Pier Celebration in 2000. In 1999 she was named one of "30 Young Show-Stoppers under 30" by the Chicago Tribune.

The Atlantic Center for the Arts has provided residency opportunities for artists in all fields since 1979.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
