GALESBURG -- Jazz vocalist Semenya McCord will perform "Songs for My Father," at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Bethel Baptist Church, 1196 N. Academy. The concert is a benefit to help establish the Ken Henderson Scholarship Fund at Knox College. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
McCord will perform with saxophonist Greg Ward and other guest artists including her son Malik and other family members Ken Henderson, Jr., and Chris, Dennis, Duwayne and Glenn Brooks. Other performers will include Limelight, a barbershop group from New Hampshire. The concert provides support for a scholarship fund at Knox College named in memory of McCord's father, Ken Henderson, who studied music at Knox in the 1930s.
A Galesburg native and 1971 Knox graduate, McCord is active as a vocalist, composer and music educator. She has developed programs highlighting the African-American experiences through spirituals, blues, and jazz. Her awards include Outstanding Jazz Vocalist from the Boston Music Awards, Martin Luther King Award for Musical Excellence from the City of Boston, and a Massachusetts Commonwealth Artist Award. McCord has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Longy School of Music, Tufts University, and the New England Conservatory of Music
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
