Alum looks at humorous side of big business

Big business is "a world of buzzwords and clichés," says Knox grad Mike O'Mary, describing his new sketch comedy, "Cubicles," playing this month at The Theater Building, 1225 W. Belmont in Chicago. "Executives flit from one management trend to the next, while employees are laid off or 'redeployed' in a never-ending series of restructurings," O'Mary says. "It's maddening, but it's also pretty funny."

Cubicles is showing at 6 p.m. on February 10, 17 and 24. Tickets are $18. Reservations are available at The Theatre Building, 773-327-5252 or Ticketmaster, 312-559-1212.

"Cubicles" is playing along with "Mistakes Were Made," a sketch comedy co-written by O'Mary, who received his bachelor's degree in English writing at Knox in 1980. O'Mary also has studied comedy writing at Second City Training Center, a writing workshop operated by The Second City, Chicago's famous comedy club. He lives in Palatine, Illinois.

In one sketch, walls are removed from bathroom stalls in an effort to promote employee camaraderie. In others, an employee is laid off on her first day at work due to a drop in the stock market, and a Viking ransacks a firm grabbing office supplies.

"These things are not as far-fetched as they might seem," says O'Mary, who has worked in corporate communications for a utility company in Chicago.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
