Knox Students Named Finalists in Writing Competition

Two students at Knox College in Galesburg have been selected as finalists in the Nick Adams Short Story Contest, a regional writing competition administered by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM), a consortium that includes Knox and 13 other colleges.

Eileen G'Sell, a senior from Franklin, Tennessee, was selected as a finalist for her story "What You Can't Have," and David Karczynski, a senior from Orland Park, was selected as a finalist for his story "Still Lives." Knox has had more winners and finalists than any other school in the 29-year-history of the contest.

A total of 40 stories by students from ACM-member colleges were submitted for the 2002 competition. The other finalists for 2002 were students from Carleton, Grinnell, and Lake Forest colleges. The winning story was written by a student from St. Olaf College, selected by author Stephen Raleigh Byler.

The competition is open to students from Knox, Beloit, Carleton, Coe, Colorado College, Cornell College, Grinnell, Lawrence, Macalester, Monmouth, Lake Forest, Ripon, St. Olaf, and The University of Chicago.

The contest, named after a character in a story by Earnest Hemingway, has been held annually since 1973. The prize of $1,000 to the winner is provided by a gift from an anonymous donor.
