Dr. Richard Millman, professor of mathematics at Knox College, has been appointed Program Director for Infrastructure in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Arlington, Virginia. The appointment takes effect September 3, 2002.
Millman's primary responsibility will be to direct a new program Vertical Integration of Graduate Educational Research (VIGRE) designed to increase the number of U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents who pursue careers in the mathematical sciences. VIGRE grants, which total about $25-million annually, promote integration of graduate and undergraduate education and research programs in mathematics. VIGRE is the largest program in the Division of Mathematical Sciences.
Dr. Millman, who was a program director at the NSF from 1984 to 1986, will be on-loan from Knox to the NSF for a maximum of three years, through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act. Dr. Millman served as President of Knox from 1998 to 2001. Previously he held academic and administrative appointments at Whittier College, California State University - San Marcos, Wright State University, Michigan Technological University and Southern Illinois University.
"Dr. Millman will bring to NSF his accomplishments both as a mathematician and as an administrator," said Roger Taylor, President of Knox College. "The Knox faculty has a national reputation for excellence, and we are pleased at the national visibility this appointment will bring."
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
