GALESBURG -- Nine Knox College students will give presentations about their independent study and research projects at 4 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 8 and 9, in the Wilson House, 182 West South St, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois. All the projects were conducted as part of the McNair Fellowship Program. The talks are free and open to the public.
The students, with their topics, are:
Tuesday, October 8
Vincent Singleton "Neo-realism Applied to Contemporary Social Issues." Singleton made a documentary film about Hopkins Park, Illinois.
Ben Thompson "Temperature Regulation of Interleukin-10 and Nitric Oxide in RAW 264.7 Macrophages." Thompson conducted research in biochemistry.
Yuna Engle "The Perfect Fan: Adolescent Girls' Idolization of Male Celebrities." Engle's project is in psychology.
Jason Reeves "Pretransitional Light Scattering in Isotropic Liquid Crystals." Reeves conducted research in physics.
Eura Ryan "Under the Watchful Eyes of Big Brother: The Suspicion of Women in Antiquity." Ryan's project is in the field of classics.
Wednesday, October 9
April Morgan "If Not Here, Where?: An Analysis of the Chicago Housing Authority's Plan for Transformation." Morgan did a project in sociology.
Rosa Tiscareno "Women in the Mexican Revolution and their Fight for the Vote." Tiscareno's work is in the area of Latin American studies.
Kandra Ellis "Judgement at the Tree: Lynching in the United States Before, During and After the Civil Rights Movement." Ellis conducted independent study in history.
Carmen Vera "Dealing with a Teen Pregnancy: Latinas in Galesburg and Cicero, Illinois." Vera's project is in the area of sociology.
The McNair Fellowship Program at Knox College is designed to promote academic careers for students with backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in academic careers. The program, which provides academic support, career preparation and research assistance, is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
