GALESBURG -- Geologist Susan Landon will give a lecture, "Iowa - A Source for Hydrocarbons," at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Room D-108, Umbeck Science-Mathematics Center, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Landon, a 1972 graduate of Knox College, began her career at Amoco in 1974, just the third woman hired by the company as a staff geologist. She explored for oil throughout the Rocky Mountains, Midwest and Alaska. In 1987 she was named exploration training manager, in charge of training for all new Amoco geologists. Since 1990 she has been an independent consultant and petroleum geologist in Denver.
Landon has published research papers on the evolution and petroleum potential of the north-central United States, and has lectured and conducted educational programs nationwide. A recipient of the Van Covering Award from the American Institute of Professional Geologists, she has served as president of the American Geological Institute, treasurer of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and on the Board of Earth Sciences and Resources of the National Research Council.
A native of Mattoon, Illinois, Landon received her bachelor's degree in geology at Knox and her master's degree at the State University of New York at Binghamton.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
