Knox College Receives Kemper Foundation Grant

GALESBURG, Ill. -- Knox College has received a grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation to help create a new Business and Management Program.

The $31,000 grant will help pay for the development of new courses such as Business and Society and Business Ethics. The college will also use the grant to help create a new Internship Coordinator position as well as provide stipends for students in non-paying internships. The grant will also allow the college to create a business and management minor.

The creation of the Business and Management program is an outcome of the recent comprehensive assessment of Knox College's educational programs, informally known as The Plan for the Renewed Knox. The program will be implemented in fall 2002.

"Based on all that we know about our alumni and their success in business, we're confident that a liberal arts education is excellent preparation for a business career," said Lawrence Breitborde, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College. "At the same time, we believe that the specialized preparation offered by this new program expands the opportunities available to our students."

The new program will emphasize participation in internships. The Internship Coordinator will be available to work with all students as part of a campus-wide initiative to expand internship opportunities.

"Data consistently indicate that internship experiences are the single most important factor in companies' decisions to hire liberal arts graduates," said Heather Zeigler Acerra, Director of Career Development and Assistant Dean of Students. "Many companies appreciate the value of a broad-based liberal arts education but place an extra value on graduates who have already demonstrated competence in a workplace setting."

The James S. Kemper Foundation is the charitable arm of Kemper Insurance Companies, one of the leading providers of business and personal insurance products. The foundation also provides the Kemper Scholars Program, which Knox joined in 2001. The Kemper Scholars Program offers internships and scholarships to outstanding students.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
