Kampwirth to Discuss Latin American Women and Guerilla Movements

GALESBURG -- Karen Kampwirth, associate professor of political science and chair of the Latin American Studies Program at Knox College, will give a lecture, "Women and Guerrilla Movements," at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the Muelder Reading Room, Seymour Library, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois.

Kampwirth's lecture is based on her recently published book, "Women and Guerrilla Movements," about women's movements in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Cuba and the Chiapas region of Mexico. Kampwirth's research encompasses eight years of interviews in Latin America. The book seeks to explain what led to the mobilization of thousands of women as combatants in recent guerrilla wars. According to Kampwirth, "today's vibrant feminist movements are one of the unexpected legacies of the guerilla wars."

The lecture is sponsored by the Knox College Faculty Development Program.

Kampwirth has researched and written extensively about Latin American women's movements, including articles in the Biographical Dictionary of Notable Latin American Women, Political Science Quarterly, and Latin American Perspectives.

Kampwirth earned her bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, at Knox College in 1986, and a doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley. A member of the Knox faculty since 1995, she has won the Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics at Iowa State University, the Chaney Competition in Gender Studies at the Latin American Studies Association, and the Philip Green Wright-Lombard College Prize for Distinguished Teaching at Knox College.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
