GALESBURG -- A delegation of students and administrators from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, will attend the upcoming International Conference on Residential Advising at Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, in Monterrey, Mexico.
Seven Knox students will attend the conference, "Leadership as a Lifestyle," Sept. 18-22 at the university, commonly referred to as ITESM/Tec De Monterrey. The students are Tim Quirk, Selina Baaf, Nancy Curry, Sam Veague, Alicia Barnes, Sharmilan Rayer, and Trisha Griener. The seven students were selected from among 26 who are serving as Residential Advisors for 2002-2003.
The students will be accompanied by Xavier Romano, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Development, and Craig Southern, Assistant Dean of Students for Campus Life and Director of Residential Learning.
The annual conference focuses on residential education and the role of residence halls in the overall educational experience. This is the second year that a group from Knox has been invited to attend the conference. Most of the schools at the conference are large, public universities. Knox was the only American liberal arts college to attend the conference last year.
"Last year, the Knox students participated in a number of roundtable discussions on topics from policies and procedures in residence halls, to the use of technology in disseminating information on campus," Romano said.
According to Romano, Knox brings to the conference the perspective of "a college that is bringing an academic focus to a number of activities and programs to settings outside the classroom, and to campus residence in particular."
At Knox, student residential advisors host both educational and social programs throughout the year in the residence halls. Knox students participate in the Peer Education program, which brings student educators to the residence halls to addresses topics such as Alcohol Education and Sexual Assault Prevention. Other activities include events such as paper-writing parties and programs that address stress management and conflict resolution.
ITESM/Tec De Monterrey is Latin America's premier technological university with 30 campuses in Mexico and additional outreach throughout Latin America and Europe.
Housing and meals for the Knox students are provided by ITESM, and transportation expenses are supported in part by a gift from Mexicana Airlines.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
