Muhammed Abu Samra and Tzvi Howard Adelman will give a lecture, "Life in Israel: A Jew and A Palestinian Speak Together," at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union. They will give a second talk, "Martyrdom in Judaism and Islam," at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Common Room, Old Main. Both talks are free and open to the public.
"For several years, Knox has brought a visiting Israeli scholar to campus to teach a course in the fall term," said Penny Gold, professor of history at Knox. "This is the first year that Knox is bringing in both Jewish and Palestinian faculty."
While at Knox, Adelman and Samra will teach a half-credit course "Judaism and Islam and Questions of Gender."
Adelman and Samra are on the faculty of Achva College, a state teachers' college in Beer Tuvia, Israel. Together, they teach a course on Jewish and Islamic texts and relations for Jewish and Arab students. Separately, they teach courses in Islam and Judaism for Jewish and Muslim students.
Adelman is also on the faculty of the Graduate Program at the Rothberg School for Overseas Students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the on-line faculty of Hebrew College in Boston. He holds degrees in Jewish Studies from Cornell, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Brandeis and has researched and written in the areas of Jewish history and culture, women in Jewish history, and early-modern Italian Jewry. Prior to moving to Israel he was the Director of the Program in Jewish Studies at Smith College, and was a visiting scholar at the Hochschule for juedische Studien in Heidelberg, the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilization at Monash University in Melbourne, and the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Massachusetts.
Samra is a Palestinian citizen of Israel who holds degrees in English and International Relations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has taught for many years in the Israeli Arab educational system. Samra's research interests include cultural and intellectual issues in the contemporary Arab thought, including Arab critical analysis of Islam. He also has taught courses Islam and on contemporary Arab thought at Al-Quds University, a newly established Palestinian university in East Jerusalem, and the David Yellin College of Education in West Jerusalem.
The lectures are sponsored by the Joseph B. Glossberg Visiting Israeli Scholars Program.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
