GALESBURG -- Knox College students will celebrate "Dandelion Day" by working at volunteer service projects in Galesburg on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Dandelion Day originated early in the 20th century, when Knox students assembled to pull weeds on campus lawns. The tradition was revived two years ago in the form of campus and community volunteer activities.
This year, student volunteers will work in Galesburg from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center, 1188 W. Main; Cottage Hospital, 695 N. Kellogg; and the Galesburg Rescue Mission, 435 E. Third. Students will also work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at various locations around the Knox campus and at the College's Green Oaks biology research area.
Coordinating the work at Safe Harbor are Frank Elliot, Audrey Klein, Rachel Bobinsky, Nina Gutierrez, and Stef Turner. Coordinating the activities at Cottage Hospital are Brian Ching, Cody Happ, Chrisie Kjelland, Melissa Compton, and Bogdan Kostic. Joe Page is coordinating work at the Rescue Mission. Bessa Schweitzer is organizing work at Green Oaks.
On the Knox campus, students will rake leaves at the tennis courts, outside residence halls, and at the Lingle Garden outside Seymour Union.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
