GALESBURG -- New York Times reporter Barry Bearak, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and Knox College graduate, will give Convocation Address at Knox's Opening Convocation, at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 12 in Harbach Theatre, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, at Knox College in Galesburg. The convocation is free and open to the public. Seating may be limited.
Bearak received a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, in recognition of his coverage of the conflict in Afghanistan. The year before, Bearak won a George Polk Award for investigative reporting from Afghanistan. Bearak and his wife Celia Dugger are co-chiefs of the New York Times bureau in New Delhi, India. Bearak earned his bachelor's degree from Knox in 1971 and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois.
"We're excited about the start of a new academic year, but reflective about the events of last September 11th," said Roger Taylor, President of Knox College. "We look forward to hearing insights from our graduate Barry Bearak, following his experiences in Afghanistan."
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
