Computer Science Competition

GALESBURG -- The newly-formed Knox Programming Team recently competed in its first Intercollegiate Programming Contest, sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

In the five-hour regional competition, Knox Team A — made up of Christopher Tessone, James Tyler Nichols, and Martin Proud — finished in 40th place of 106 teams that participated Nov. 2 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Knox Team B — made up of Drew Cousino, Kurt Sheffer, Alex Baker, and Aaron Lepkin — finished in 83rd place.

"The Knox teams that have only been together for about a month, so this is a terrific first showing," said John Dooley, associate professor of computer science. "Knox finished ahead of most comparable schools, as well as several much larger university teams."

Knox competed in the Mid-Central USA region, which includes Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The regional tournament was won by a team from the University of Illinois at Urbana, which will advance to the ACM World Finals in California in March, 2003.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
