GALESBURG -- Knox College has successfully completed the largest fund drive in the College's history the $125-million "Knox Now!" campaign. The fund-raising campaign, which was formally announced in 1997, concluded on its scheduled completion date of June 30, 2002, with a total of $125,990,465 in gifts and pledges.
"The Knox Now campaign far exceeded what we initially thought was possible," said Knox College President Roger L. Taylor. "Supporters of Knox have made truly remarkable commitments to the future of the College and the academic achievements of students and faculty."
More than 14,300 donors made gifts and pledges to the campaign. Of the $125 million total, $45.1 came in the form of outright gifts. The remaining $80.8 million is in long-term pledges and other estate commitments. During the course of the campaign, annual gifts for current operations rose to a new record of $3,083,064 in 2002. The campaign also includes gifts totaling $385,903 from 128 businesses in the Galesburg area.
"The generosity of thousands of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations has made it possible for Knox to develop new academic programs, acquire equipment, and refurbish facilities that students will use for years to come," explained Taylor. "In addition, a total of $20.3 million was committed for endowed student scholarships and $19 million was pledged toward endowed faculty chairs, ensuring that Knox students will continue to benefit from an affordable, high-quality education, centered on close contact with outstanding scholars."
The Knox Now! Campaign Steering Committee was chaired by Trustees Diane B. Rosenberg, Jarvis B. Cecil, John E. Fellowes, Donald V. Fites, Frank J. Kerous, James R. Potter, Ralph Walter, and Morton W. Weir.
"Despite uncertainties in the national economy, support for Knox has continued to grow, thanks in large part to incredible leadership by the College's Board of Trustees and the campaign steering committee," said Brian Williams, Vice President for Advancement.
Twenty-eight individual donors and one corporation Caterpillar, Inc. of Peoria committed $1 million or more to the Campaign.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
