GALESBURG -- More than 30 Knox College alumni will participate in community service projects in Galesburg and Chicago on October 26, as part of National "Make a Difference Day."
The volunteer effort, coordinated by Carol Brown, assistant director of alumni affairs at Knox, will assemble Knox alumni at two locations in Galesburg Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center, 1188 W. Main, and the Galesburg Rescue Mission, 435 E. Third St.; and two locations in Chicago Christopher House, 2507 N. Greenview, and Saving a Child Foundation, 2516 W. Cortez.
"Knox alumni have indicated that they're interested in community service," Brown said. "This is a way for alumni to get together with each other and do something for their communities."
Eleven Galesburg-area Knox alumni are scheduled to assist, between 8 a.m. and 12 noon, at the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center and the Galesburg Rescue Mission, helping organize donations of food and clothing for distribution.
At Christopher House, a social service agency, 14 Knox alumni are scheduled to help with games and other activities at the agency's Fall Festival.
At Saving a Childhood Foundation, an educational and community service organization, eleven Knox alumni are scheduled to assemble gift baskets and assist in preparations for a fund-raising auction in November.
Helping coordinate the activities in Chicago is Thad Kind, a Galesburg native and 1995 Knox graduate who currently works as an editor for Encyclopedia Britannica.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 40 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
