Gary Schmidt, visiting assistant professor of modern languages at Knox College, will give a lecture, "Coming Out in Print: Gay and Lesbian Voices in 20th Century Literature," at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11 in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The lecture is presented by the student group Common Ground to mark National Coming Out Day, is free and open to the public.
Schmidt graduated from Knox in 1989, magna cum laude, with degrees in International Relations and German. He earned a master's degree in secondary education at Northern Illinois University, a master's degree in German at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a doctorate in German at Washington University in St. Louis.
Schmidt has studied and worked in Germany, and his research interests include Twentieth-century German literature, gay and lesbian studies, and sexuality and political discourse in postwar Germany.
