The Richter Memorial Trusts have awarded Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, a grant of $97,205 to support the Richter Memorial Scholars Program at Knox for 2001-2002. The program, which began at Knox in 1997, supports student research and independent study.
"Knox College is a leader in promoting top-notch undergraduate research by involving students directly with individual faculty mentors. The support of the Richter Memorial Trusts indicates our continuing success in developing the skills of students in this critical area," said Stephen Bailey, Associate Dean of Knox College and on-campus coordinator of the Richter Memorial Scholars Program.
Richter Memorial Scholarships at Knox are awarded in three categories:
The Richter Memorial Scholars Program at Knox College is supported by grants from The Paul K. Richter Memorial Trust and The Evalyn E. Cook Richter Memorial Trust, established by J. Edward Richter, 1898-1967, in memory of his parents. A native of Chicago and 1921 graduate of Yale University, Richter also studied from 1921 to 1923 at the University of Cambridge in England. He created the two trusts, administered by Bank of America, to support special projects by students at private colleges, in particular the kind of close faculty-student interaction, collaboration and mentorship that characterized his experience at Cambridge.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
