Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, has joined the Kemper Scholars Program, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate business scholarship and internship programs. The Program allows Knox students to apply for scholarships and paid summer internships provided by Kemper Insurance Companies and the James S. Kemper Foundation. The program is open to undergraduates at just 18 colleges and universities, including Brigham Young University, Drake University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Only about 60 undergraduate students are selected annually as Kemper Scholars.
The program, which has been in existence for more than 50 years, provides each Kemper Scholar with three annual scholarships and three paid summer internships at Kemper offices nationwide. The interns work at least one summer at Kemper's corporate headquarters in the Chicago area. In addition to the paid internships, Kemper Scholars receive scholarships of between $3,000 and $8,000 per year based on the individual student's financial need.
"This is an excellent opportunity for Knox students to get substantive summer jobs with an industry leader early in their college careers, and then to build on their experience for two more summers," said Kevin Hastings, Knox College registrar, professor of mathematics and campus coordinator for the program.
Knox was invited to participate in the Kemper Scholars Program in part because of the College's strength in mathematics, according to Dr. Thomas Hellie, executive director of the James S. Kemper Foundation. "The Foundation is interested in offering top students an opportunity to explore careers in the actuarial field," Hellie said. The Foundation's Board of Directors approved Knox's joining the program on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001.
At least one Kemper Scholar is selected annually from each of the 18 colleges in the program. Criteria include academic record and a strong commitment to prepare for a career in business. Kemper Scholars are neither guaranteed full-time positions with Kemper, nor are they required to work for Kemper following graduation. However, many have chosen to join Kemper, including David Mathis, the current chairman and CEO of Kemper Insurance Companies. "The program places responsibility on each Kemper Scholar to define individually how best to use the experiences and opportunities inherent in the program," Hellie said.
Kemper Insurance Companies was established in 1912 by James S. Kemper. With 8,700 employees worldwide and nearly $5-billion in revenues, Kemper Insurance Companies is a leading provider of property-casualty insurance, risk management services, and business and personal insurance products. The James S. Kemper Foundation was created in 1942 and the Kemper Scholars Program in 1948.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
