Shannon Lanier and Jane Feldman, co-authors of the book "Jefferson's Children: The Story of One American Family," will give a lecture at 7:00 p.m Thursday, Nov. 8, in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Lanier and Feldman co-authored "Jefferson's Children," which explores the topic of race and culture in America through the story of Jefferson's descendants. The book consists of interviews with Jefferson's descendants, historical and scientific commentary, observations by Lanier and photographs by Feldman. (Photo, right: Jane Feldman, Shannon Lanier. Lanier is the sixth great-grandson of Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings. He is currently a student at Kent State University. Feldman is a professional photographer who devotes much of her time to working with non-profit organizations.
The lecture is sponsored by the Knox College Black Studies Department, Cultural Events Committee, and Office of Intercultural Life.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
