Norman Golar Honored by Lincoln Academy

Norman Golar, a Knox College senior from Chicago, has been honored as a 2001 Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. Golar was among 49 college seniors who received the awards from Illinois Governor George Ryan at a ceremony Oct. 27 in Springfield.

"These students have exhibited a personal commitment to excel, as seen by their remarkable academic achievements," Governor Ryan said following the award presentation. "Just as important, these students serve as role models for other Illinois students, as well as their own family and friends. With hard-working, dedicated individuals such as these, Illinois and the rest of the nation can look forward to a bright and prosperous future."

A creative writing major, Golar has been on the Dean's List at Knox, and has participated in varsity basketball and Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality. Last spring he was named College Marshal — an outstanding member of the junior class who is selected to lead the procession of graduating seniors at commencement. Golar is a 1998 graduate of Martin Luther King High School, Chicago.

Lincoln Academy Student Laureate Awards, which include a medallion and $150 honorarium, are presented for excellence in academic and extracurricular activities, with one Student Laureate nominated annually by each four-year college and university in Illinois. Also, one Student Laureate is selected by the Illinois Community College Board from among all Illinois community college students. In addition to the Student Laureate Awards, the Academy annually presents the Order of Lincoln to distinguished Illinois citizens. The Lincoln Academy was established in 1965.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 42 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
