Knox College Ranked Among Leaders for Academic Quality

Knox College is ranked number one in academic reputation among liberal arts colleges in Illinois, according to the 2002 annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report. Knox received a rating of "3.0" in academic reputation, in the view of college presidents, academic deans and directors of admission.

Summary of Knox rankings among liberal arts colleges in US News:
Academic Reputation - #1 in Illinois
International Diversity - #10 in the U.S.
Best Value - #14 in the U.S.

"Knox focuses on students and on delivering a world-class educational experience," said Dr. Lawrence Breitborde, Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. "We are pleased that the rankings in U.S. News continue to reflect Knox's level of accomplishment."

Knox also is ranked tenth among national liberal arts colleges in the proportion of international students.

In addition, Knox is one of only two colleges in Illinois, and one of only three in Illinois and Iowa, identified by U.S. News as "Best Values" in higher education. In the Best Value rankings, Knox placed 14th among national liberal arts colleges that the U.S. News describes as "great schools at great prices." The other Illinois and Iowa schools in the Best Value rankings are Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, which is ranked seventh, and Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, which is ranked 21st.

The Best Value rankings focus on colleges that, according to the magazine, are "above average academically" at a "lower cost to the student."

"Knox believes that a high quality education should be affordable for all qualified students, and we work hard to make that happen," said Paul Steenis, Director of Admission.

The rankings will be published in book form on Sept. 10 and in the magazine's weekly issue on Sept. 17.

U.S. News measures academic quality on the basis of reputation, the proportion of students who complete their degrees, class size, test scores and class rank for entering students, and alumni satisfaction. The Best Value rankings also consider the proportion of students who receive financial aid.

In other college rankings, Knox is listed among the 331 Best Colleges by the Princeton Review, which also rated Knox's library among the top 15 college libraries in the nation. Knox was listed by Yahoo Internet Life Magazine as one of the nation's "Most Wired Colleges," and by TheCenter, an educational research institute, as one of the top 150 colleges in the U.S. in the academic caliber of its student body.
