Knox College's President Richard S. Millman recently announced his intent to resign on September 1. The Board has begun a search for Millman's successor — the college's 18th president. Taylor provides continuity of leadership for Knox during the transition.

Taylor retired in 1999 as a partner at the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago, where he remains Of Counsel. He will focus his attention on fundraising, including helping the college complete its $125 million Knox Now! Campaign, slated for completion in June 2002.

"I look forward to working closely with John Podesta to get the word out about what a terrific college Knox is," comments Taylor. "Knox College delivers an innovative, demanding, highly successful educational experience. I am proud to be able to assist my alma mater during this pivotal time in its history."

Taylor is a 1963 graduate of Knox College and has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1988. He has chaired the Board for two years. Taylor is also a graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, graduating with honors in 1971 and serving as an editor for the law review.

Lawrence B. Breitborde, Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs expressed enthusiasm for the dual appointments, "Their willingness to assume these responsibilities on behalf of their alma mater at a time of institutional transition is inspiring," Breitborde explains. "We enthusiastically look forward to their leadership."

Podesta is a 1971 graduate of Knox College and a member of the Board of Trustees. "My Knox experience laid the groundwork for much of my future work in business, law, and public service," Podesta said. "I'm pleased that I can return to Knox some tangible benefit from all it has given me."

Podesta is also a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where he is Visiting Professor of Law, teaching courses in technology policy, congressional investigations, and public interest law. Most recently he was the White House Chief of Staff under President Clinton. Prior to that he held positions as Deputy Chief of Staff and Staff Secretary in the Clinton Administration.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,120 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
