The 21st annual Knox College - Rootabaga Jazz Festival will feature Downbeat award winning vocalist Kurt Elling (right), trumpeter Orbert Davis, saxophonist Mark Colby, high school jazz bands, and the Knox College Jazz Ensemble, March 4-10 in Galesburg.

The festival schedule is:
Sunday, March 4, 5:30 p.m. -8 p.m. at Jumer's Continental Inn, Galesburg. The Knox Jazz Ensemble, directed by Scott Garlock, presents a 1940's style Swing Dance. Tickets are $7 per person or $12 per couple, available at the door.
Monday, March 5, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Chez Willy's, 41. S. Seminary. The Scott Garlock Trio, with Scott Garlock, trombone; Andy Crawford, guitar; and Nate Wiswall, bass. Free admission.
Thursday, March 8, 8 p.m. - 12 midnight at Cherry St. Brewing Co. Knox Jazz Faculty and Friends, featuring Scott Garlock, Manny Lopez, Danny Leahy, Cassie Hart, Larry Harms, Kevin Malley, David Rogosin, Joe Metzka, Ron Wilson and Kevin Hart. Tickets $6 at the door.
Friday, March 9, 8 p.m. - 12 midnight at Cherry St. Brewing Co. Knox College Alumni Big Band, featuring guest artists Orbert Davis, trumpet; and Mark Colby, saxophone. Tickets are $7 at the door.
Saturday, March 10, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre, 57 S. Kellogg, Galesburg. High school jazz festival, featuring bands from ROWVA, Chillicothe, Alexis, Galesburg and the University of Chicago Laboratory School. The bands will receive performance tips from Downbeat award-winner Kurt Elling and members of his quartet. Tickets are $3 at the door. (Schedule below.)

Kurt Elling Quartet
Kurt Elling, a jazz vocalist based in Chicago, is a three time Grammy nominee and Downbeat magazine Vocalist of the Year. He is regarded as one of "music's most innovative voices." Over the last five years, Elling has risen to international prominence as a recording artist and continues to set the standard for new directions in vocal jazz performance.
Elling has performed to critical acclaim in Canada, Israel, Japan, Australia and Europe. He expanded his career from performer to producer, arranger and composer, on his recording "The Messenger," which won the Jazz Record of the Year at the Chicago Music Awards. Elling has been featured on "CNN's Show Biz Today" and hundreds of newspaper and magazine reviews.
Robert Amster, bass guitarist, has worked with the Kurt Elling Quartet since 1994, when he helped produce Elling's first release, "Close Your Eyes," which was nominated for a Grammy in 1995. Since then, he worked in Chicago as a freelancer, and performed with many artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Lavano and Jon Hendricks. He is also a member of the "Ravinia Jazz Mentors," a group based in suburban Chicago.
Laurence Hobgood, pianist, studied classical instruction at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he also played for three years in the "A" jazz ensemble led by John Garvey. Working in Chicago since 1988, he has performed with some of Chicago's premiere artists such as Ed Peterson, Fareed Haque and Paul Werlico. He joined the Elling Quarter in 1993. In 1996, he joined a new trio, "Union," whose recordings were selected as among the top ten jazz recordings of 1997 and 1999 by the Chicago Tribune.
Mark Colby
Mark Colby has been described by the New York Times as a "brilliant saxophone soloist in the virtuoso range." He has performed with jazz greats such as Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Haden and Mose Allison. Colby is known as a 'first call' studio musician, and has played on more than 2,000 commercials in the Chicago market. He teaches jazz at DePaul University and Elmhurst College.
Mark Colby also performs as a guest soloist/clinician at schools throughout the United States, including the University of Texas, Ohio State University, Drake University and Northern Illinois University.

Orbert Davis
A well-known Chicago Jazz-trumpeter and educator, Orbert Davis has performed with notable artists such as Ramsey Lewis, Charles Earland, Kurt Elling, Bob Mamet and William Russo's Chicago Jazz Ensemble. He was chosen as one of Chicago Tribune's "1995 Arts People of the Year," as well a featured performer for the 1999 Jazz Institute of Chicago's "Tribute to Louis Armstrong: Legacy for the Millennium." He is a regular session musician and has performed on more than 2,500 commercials.
Davis has a bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from DePaul University and a masters degree in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern University. Currently, he is co-founder, and executive director of MusicAlive!, a comprehensive out-reach program for at-risk middle school students. He performs regularly with his critically acclaimed ensemble, "Orbert Davis with Strings Attached."
