Knox College confirmed that Richard S. Millman has decided to step down as President of the College, effective September 1, 2001. Board Chair Roger Taylor said that he had accepted Dr. Millman's decision "with regret." Taylor credited Millman for laying the groundwork for the anticipated conclusion in June 2002 of Knox's $125 million Knox Now! Campaign. According to Taylor, Dr. Millman had been responsible for securing several significant gifts for the Knox Now! Campaign, including the largest single gift in the College's history, $11 million.
Taylor also praised Dr. Millman for having attracted several key senior administrators to Knox, including a new chief financial officer, a new athletic director and a new director of public relations. Taylor continued, "Dr. Millman's focus upon Knox students and their achievements and his regard for faculty members and their accomplishments is widely known."
Dr. Millman plans to take a sabbatical and then return to teaching and scholarship at Knox in the Mathematics Department where he is a tenured professor.
Millman said, "Now that Knox is positioned to successfully complete the Knox Now! Campaign, I want to return to teaching and scholarship as a member of the Knox faculty. As I told the graduates of the class of 2001 at Commencement, Knox is a wonderful college about which we all need to go and brag. I have often said that Knox offers rare opportunities for students because of dedicated teaching informed by active scholarship."
The Knox board's executive committee has scheduled a meeting for June 15, 2001 to consider an interim replacement for Dr. Millman.
Dr. Millman came to Knox from Whittier College, where he was provost. Before that he held positions as provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University, San Marcos, and dean of the college of science and mathematics at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Millman holds a B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. from Cornell University, and a certificate in education management from Harvard University.
