Irene Ponce, Reader Services Technician at Knox College's Seymour Library, is the 2001 recipient of the Jane O'Brien Award from the Illinois Library Association (ILA). The award recognizes outstanding professional service by library staff. Ponce, who has worked at the Knox College Seymour Library for 17 years, received the award on Thursday, October 18, at the ILA annual conference at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois.
"Irene has improved service, efficiency and turn-around time for processing interlibrary loans," said Anne Giffey, Assistant Librarian for Public Services. "She helped plan the computerization of interlibrary loans and is now our database manager." Ponce, who completed her bachelor's degree at Knox in 2000 by attending classes part-time, also helped create programs for other "non-traditional" students at Knox.

The award is named in honor of Jane O'Brien of Schaumburg Township District Library, who founded the ILA's support group for library assistants.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
