Bruce Polay, professor of music at Knox College and music director of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, has received a 2001 ASCAP/Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. The award recognizes the wide scope of Polay's work both compositions, and recordings and performances of his compositions. It is the eighth consecutive year that Polay has been honored by ASCAP.
Polay is currently completing several works under commission "Semi-Suite for Violin, Cello, and Piano," a commission by the Quad Cities Friends of Music; "Spanish String Fling," commissioned by the Chamber Orchestra of the Emporda, Spain; an orchestral overture and incidental music for a theatrical production; and an orchestral overture, "Golden Oldie," which will be premiered by the Knox-Galesburg Symphony this fall.
"Golden Oldie" is commissioned by Azer Clinic of Galesburg, in honor of the KGS's 50th anniversary season that begins in October 2001, and of October as National Physical Therapy Month.
Polay's compositions "Y'Urning" Cycle for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano (1999) and "Cathedral Images" for Orchestra (1996) have both been recorded on CD. His work "Tranquil Cycle for Tenor and Orchestra," won Honorable Mention in the 1993 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers/Rudolf Nissim Orchestral Composition Competition.
As a pianist, Polay has performed throughout the United States, including at Carnegie Hall. As a guest conductor, he has led orchestras in Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Belorus, England and Spain.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
