Knox College Seeks Host Families for International Students

Knox College is accepting applications from Galesburg- area families interested in serving as host families for international students. Orientation for new international students at Knox begins on Tuesday, August 28.

Knox anticipates openings for as many as two-dozen host families, according to Marjorie Fuller, Associate Dean of Students for Intercultural Life.

Host Families Sought

"Since international students live in college housing and eat in the college cafeteria, host families are most needed to help students learn about the community and adjust to life in the U.S.," Fuller said.

"One of the most popular activities is occasionally having the student over for dinner," Fuller said. "Also, because of the cost of travel, many international students remain on campus during winter and summer vacations, and host families often include them in holiday activities." Fuller's office has assembled other helpful hints for first-time host families.

With 12% of its students coming from outside the U.S., Knox has been ranked in the top five liberal arts colleges in the nation in international diversity by U.S. News & World Report.

More information about the host family program is available from Fuller at 309 341 7230, or from Poornima Raghunathan at 309-341-7231 or via e-mail to: praghuna@knox.edu.

For families who are willing to provide room and meals for an international student, Knox is also making referrals to AFS, which is also seeking host families for international students. Formerly known by its full name, American Field Service, AFS is seeking host families for international exchange students arriving in August. More information about AFS hosting is available from 1-800-AFS-INFO or the AFS web site, http://www.afs.org/usa

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
