The Knox College chapter of Habitat for Humanity has been awarded a grant of $15,000 from Habitat for Humanity International. The grant will allow the student-led chapter, for the first time in its history, to sponsor a house on its own. The Knox College chapter works in conjunction with the Knox County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, which has sponsored the construction of more than 20 houses for low-income residents of Galesburg and Knox County.
"This grant from Habitat for Humanity International is national recognition of the achievements of the students in the Habitat chapter at Knox," said Xavier Romano, Knox's Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Development. "The students have taken the lead in involving faculty and staff, and in working with the Knox County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. They have even given up their spring vacations to work on Habitat projects in other parts of the country."
Under terms of the grant from Habitat for Humanity International, the Knox College chapter must raise at least $10,000 in matching funds this year. Fundraising events included a cardboard house construction contest on Friday, May 11.
