Knox College student Douglas Falk of St. Louis, Missouri, recently won third place in regional finals in the Miles Davis Trumpet Competition. Falk placed first in the initial round, held in March, and third in the regional finals held in St. Louis in May.
Participants from Missouri and Illinois between the ages of 16 and 21 played improvised solos in several styles and original compositions. The judges were Clark Terry, Russell Gunn, Wallace Roney and Claudio Roditi. For his third place finish, Falk received a Shure KSM32 Studio Microphone and trumpet accessories from United Musical Instruments. In addition, he will be recognized in the jazz magazine Down Beat.
The competition is sponsored by G. LeBlanc Corporation, Shure Microphones, Times Up Productions, Down Beat Magazine, and United Musical Instruments.
Falk, who recently completed his first year at Knox, is a member of the Knox Jazz Ensemble, which has won several performance awards.
Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
