WVKC, the student-operated radio station at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, this week installed a RealAudio server, enabling the station to broadcast its programming on the Internet. The station, which has a staff of nearly 100, operates 18 hours a day during the academic year.
Internet service will add to the station's existing FM-stereo broadcast coverage. It transmits at 90.7 FM with a signal of 1,000 watts, giving it a coverage area that includes Galesburg and Knox County.
The station staff includes students, faculty and administrators, as well as volunteers from the community. Programming includes newscasts, music discussion, live hip-hop 'turntablism' and freeform shows. The manager is Eric Pietras, a senior from La Grange, Illinois.
"Unlike a lot of FM radio stations, WVKC already has a national and even international audience," Pietras said. "Knox has thousands of alumni in all 50 states and several hundred who live outside the U.S. For years, WVKC has been one of the largest student organizations on campus, which means there are a lot of former students who might be interested in what the station sounds like today."
