TubaChristmas, Dec. 2 at Orpheum Theatre

"TubaChristmas" will mark its tenth anniversary in Galesburg with its annual free concert at 12 noon, Saturday, Dec. 2, in the Orpheum Theatre, 57 S. Kellogg Street.

The free, public, one-hour concert of holiday tunes features an ensemble of more than forty tuba, euphonium and baritone musicians directed by Scott Garlock, associate professor of music at Knox. Bob Sheehan, Mayor of the City of Galesburg, will be the celebrity guest tubist for the performance.

Interested low brass musicians are invited to participate and may contact Garlock at 309-341-7265 or via email to sgarlock@knox.edu.

"Harvey Phillips, who founded TubaChristmas at Indiana University in 1974, wanted to demonstrate what a beautiful sound a mass ensemble of tubas and euphoniums could make," Garlock said. "It also provides the opportunity for low brass players to celebrate the season with one another and with the community."

Garlock has taught at Knox since 1990 and has led the College's jazz ensemble to several performance awards. He has played on more than 100 jazz recording sessions and has performed with the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, as well the Peoria and Quad Cities symphonies.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
