Knox Dean named to New Post, VP for Student Development

Xavier RomanoKnox College has created a new post, Vice President for Student Development, and named Xavier Romano to fill the position, in addition to his current duties as Dean of Students. The creation of the position was approved by the college's Board of Trustees on Saturday, Oct. 14. Dr. Richard S. Millman, President of the College, announced Romano's appointment on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

"This new position recognizes the integration of the curricular and co-curricular aspects of the Knox education," Millman said. "The best liberal arts education is one that takes advantage of community and 'residentiality' and uses them to enhance the regular curriculum. With this new position, Knox formalizes its commitment to growth and development that take place on the Knox campus in countless ways beyond the classroom. "

Romano came to Knox in 1998. Previously he was vice president for student services at Holy Names College, Oakland, California. A graduate of the University of Oregon, he earned a master's degree in educational administration at Santa Clara University and is completing a doctor of education degree at the University of San Francisco.

Romano is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship for study in Germany. He is active in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Illinois Board of Latinos in Higher Education, and he serves as a reviewer for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a regional educational accreditation agency.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
